Original Rambo Knife: A Must for Jungle Survival
Filed Under Original Rambo Knife Musings | Leave a Comment
The 1982 movie “First Blood” starred by Sylvester Stallone has epitomized the fictional character John J. Rambo and his jungle survival knife. The story’s plot tells of an ultimate Vietnam War survivor returning to his homeland, only to be ostracized for the cruelty of the war he was involved in. John Rambo has then developed as a mercenary, a killing machine out to destroy the forces of evil.
The story lived and serialized into three more installments — Rambo: First Blood Part II in 1985, Rambo III in 1988 and 20 years later, the 2008 movie Rambo. As the legend keeps on being told, the original Rambo knife takes a new form. The last series of movie showed Rambo blacksmithing his new knife out of a metal sheet as he engage the tyrants of Burma.
Military units, whether in the army, in the navy or in the air force, all carry survival knives as a standard issue. Outdoor enthusiasts and professionals like hunters, mountaineers, sportsmen and forest rangers regard the original Rambo knife as the best designed complete survival knife.
The original Rambo knife survival kit actually comes with a smaller folded knife. This is probably in recognition that the original Rambo knife is such a bulky survival knife, and the smaller folded knife would do the job that does not require the services of the big knife. So when speaking of the original Rambo knife, we are referring to a set of survival knives. The original knife’s maker, Jimmy Lile, actually created a demand for customized survival knives after the movie Rambo, most especially today that it keeps on coming back to the widescreen.
The term “hunting knife” was introduced by Webster Marbles on the turn of the century. It looks differently from the traditional butcher’s knife used by 19th century military men and hunters. It has a thicker blade, a cross guard and a pommel. Since then, cutlery manufacturers introduced their own models of survival knives, and the Swiss knife makers were famous for their long line of products.
The serrated teeth introduced in the original Rambo knife is intended to saw into thin metal sheets, such as when trapped inside a crash plane or helicopter. The saw-teeth at the back of the blade do not make good as wood saw, because it is not really intended for such purpose.
The provision of a hollow in the handle to fit in a survival kit became popular after Rambo. With a 5-inch handle, there is enough room for a first aid set, fish hooks and lines, and several match sticks – which is just what a survivor needs in a jungle condition. Furthermore, the inclusion of a compass at the back of the hollow handle’s airtight cap completes the survival package. The nylon thread wrapped around the Rambo knife’s handle made it look great.
During the Second World War, lifeboats aboard vessels of the navy and parachutes on board an aircraft usually integrate a survival knife as part of the kit. This recognizes the high probability that personnel may be shot down or drift into the enemy territory. Those who would survive a crash or a shipwreck must have a reliable survival knife to stay alive behind enemy lines. Real life war veterans have testified how important a survival had been, a fact emulated in the fictional Green Beret character John Rambo.

The Quest for the Original Rambo Knife
Filed Under Original Rambo Knife Musings | Leave a Comment
There is no doubt the phenomenal success of the Rambo movie series created a huge demand for an original Rambo knife in particular, and customized survival knives in general. The internet has been flooded with so much sales pages offering access resellers of so-called “authentic” Rambo survival knives. To avoid being fooled by scammers, one needs to learn more about the knife in greater detail.
The knife used in First Blood (1982 movie) was designed by famous knife-maker Jimmy Lile. The original Rambo knife was manufactured by Master Cutlery of 700 Penhorn Avenue, Secaucus, New Jersey in collaboration with the Holywood Collectibles Group. According to the ‘certificate of authenticity’ published in the website of the original Rambo knife, there are only 5,000 serial-numbered units engraved with John J. Rambo’s signature (the exact replica of the one that appeared in First Blood) that was released in the market. This signature 14-inch survival knife with a 5-inch handle, 9-inch blade and 0.25-inch thickness, is now a collector’s item.

However, Master Cutlery still sells the replica original Rambo knife without the serial number and John Rambo’s signature engraved in the blade. The brand name RAMBO and ‘First Blood’ are inscribed on the based of the blade just above the cross guard.
The knife used in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985 movie) is two-toned black and stainless blade. It is 1.38-inches longer than the first Rambo knife. The handle is 5.38-inches long, thickness is 0.25-inches and the blade is 10-inches, or one inch longer than the knife used in First Blood. Aside from the physical length, the notable difference between the first and the second knives is the protruding skull crusher of the cap sealing the hollow handle. The crossguard of both models, which is a regular and Philip’s screw driver on both ends, remained the same. Only 5,000 serial-numbered John Rambo signature knives of this model was released by Master Cutlery, although exact replicas without the signature are massively produced.
The version of the original Rambo knife used in Rambo III is the longer than the first two models, measuring 18-inches overall length. Its blade is 13-inches long and its wooden handle is 5-inches. The saw-teeth at the back of the blade is not as elaborate as the first two models, but the obvious difference is the hollow line space in the middle of the blade, which is probably as way to reduce the knife’s weight. This is a rather bulky design for a survival knife, and concealing it is something next to impossible. Like the first two models, there are only 5,000 signature replicas released as collector’s item.
The 2008 Rambo knife is more of a story than a parade of exciting utility found in a perfect survival knife. Well, in the script, John Rambo did the work of a blacksmith to produce this knife as he battles the tyrant rulers of Burma. It is also 18-inches long as the original Rambo knife Rambo III knife, and made of black carbon steel to produce that primitive or classic look. It is more of a jungle bolo than a survival knife. The designer probably eyed collectors than real-life utility knife users. Also, only 5,000 signature replicas are manufactured by Master Cutlery.

An original Rambo knife is one that was created and used in each of the five Rambo movies. They were created by Sylvester Stallone and forged by Jimmy Lile and Gil Hibbon. But all basically prove that a knife used in the hands of an expert can not only save, but also kill. The movies showed off the original Rambo knife line versatility during different situations and the Rambo knife has a legend bestowed upon it by the man who played John Rambo.
The eight notches are for the members of Rambo’s platoon that served in ‘Nam on the original Rambo knife . Since this is an original Rambo knife, this is a double edged knife; the cuts made will be quick and clean. These knifes were used for hunting as well as combat. This is one tough knife being of Tungsten steel. This is an original knife based upon the movies and is commercially available from retailers, collectors and internet sites online. Each one of the four was specifically created for the character John Rambo.
Each one of the original Rambo knife line bears a similar resemblance to the original that premiered in First Blood in 1980. However there are some differences between the blades. Each blade was a little bigger and the knife for Rambo 4 was the biggest of them all. Each one of these original Rambo knife creations is a true survival knife, save for #4. Knife one was 14 inches, Knife two was 15 inches, Knife 3 was 16 inches. Now knife 4 is not considered to be a true survival knife in that particular sense. As per the movies, Rambo loses knife 3 in the jungle and forges # 4 to replace it.
Knife 4 of the original Rambo knife set was created to look primitive with an 18 inch size and made of carbon steel. Each of these knives has a story to tell from the Rambo storyline. Each one is just like the ones in the movies, and is manufactured the same. The price ranges from knife to knife and seller to seller. They can go up to 2,500 for knife number 4 to over 25,000 for the others dependent upon where you buy them from and who. These originals are not copies; they are manufactured under license from the Rambo movies.

Four Generations of the Original Rambo Knife
Filed Under Original Rambo Knife Musings | 2 Comments
Rambo is a fictional character in the successful 1982 movie First Blood. As a Vietnam War veteran and Green Beret, John James Rambo is a skilled soldier who was trained to specialize in jungle survival. His ultimate weapon is a specially designed survival knife that later became the popular original Rambo knife.
The original Rambo knife used in movie First Blood was designed by Jimmy Lile, a famous knife maker, and manufactured by United Cutlery. After reading through the script of the movie, he conceptualized a knife that would support all the needs to survive in an ultimate jungle. In his design, the original Rambo knife has the following components:
- A 14 split saw teeth on the knife’s spine
- Cross guard that works as screw drivers
- A hole for lashing in the cross guard
- A handle made of D2 steel wrapped by nylon thread
- Survival kit including match, first aid, fish hooks and line are stored in the watertight hollow inside the handle
- A compass hidden in the handle cap of the original Rambo knife
- A small folding knife accompanying the original knife
- A sheath made of original cowhide
The original Rambo knife is relatively long, measuring 14 inches in overall length, 9 inches of which consist of the blade. It was originally made of D2 steel but later orders were made of more polished and harder 440c stainless steel, others are made of 420 J2 stainless steel. The nylon thread wrapped around the handle made the knife feel and look great.
In the 1985 movie “Rambo: First Blood Part II”, the original Rambo knife used is longer, measuring 15.375 inches long, 10 inches of which consists of the blade. It looks very similar to the original Rambo knife because it also sports a push tang make.
In the 1988 movie Rambo III, the knife used by Rambo is a very long one with an overall length of 18 inches, 13 inches of which consists the blade. It was designed by Gil Hibben, another master knife smith. Its handle is a laminated hard wood and its guard and pommel are stainless. It comes with a genuine leather belt and sheath, with an optional leg tie.
Twenty years later, the fourth Rambo movie of 2008, the knife used is a collector’s item. This fourth version of original Rambo knife is made of D2 carbon steel with an overall length of 18 inches, 12 inches of which consists the blade. It is such a big knife; its blade is about ¼ inch thick. A paracord wrapped around its handle is topped by a waterproof tape to make a good grip.
The fourth Rambo knife is not as successful that the previous original Rambo knives because its does not look like a survival knife. Critics said it more a collectors item that one that is suitable in jungle battle. This looks like a primitive blade with little utility tools integrated with it. The fourth series of the original Rambo knife is a crude weapon made by John Rambo himself in the movie, which was a consequence of having lost all the earlier three original Rambo knives. He made this knife out of an iron sheet and wrapped its handle with a paracord to complete its good looks.

Original Rambo Knife - Sylvester Stallone’s Influence
Filed Under Original Rambo Knife Musings | Leave a Comment
The Original Rambo Knife has a place in my heart going back to when I was a youngster. I had one of those survival knives with the compass, fishing line, waterproof matches and all of the other goodies stored inside of the handle. Now, I’m not claiming that it was an Original Rambo Knife. But, it was close enough for me.

I can remember grabbing my wannabe Original Rambo Knife, wrapping my red bandana around my head, stripping off my shirt and heading towards the woods to fight off evil Viet Cong and rescue more POWs than Rambo ever could have dreamt of. I can’t tell you how many bad guys fell to my Original Rambo Knife.
The Original Rambo Knife that appeared in the first Rambo movie stuck in my mind and I had to have one just like it. I guess I’ve got that old feeling that I had when I was a kid upon seeing the new Rambo movie. There he was with his Original Rambo Knife. Man, those old desires of want all came rushing back.
The Original Rambo Knife was greatly influenced by Sylvester Stallone. Imagine being so famous and influential that you could have your own survival knife designed just the way you wanted for a part in a movie. That’s pretty impressive the way I see it and not to mention, I’ve always been a Stallone fan.
